Mongolian desertification is caused by excessive 'grazing'!

June 17th is 'World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought'.

Since the early 1970s, the international community has realized the seriousness of desertification and has been discussing countermeasures.

Afterwards, on June 17, 1994, in Paris, France, an agreement was signed to prevent desertification in countries experiencing extreme weather and desertification to protect the global environment.

And in 1994, the 29th United Nations General Assembly designated June 17 as the 'Desertification Prevention Day' every year to commemorate the signing of the Convention for the Prevention of Desertification.

What is desertification?

First of all, the 'desert' as we commonly know it is a place where nothing can live in the desert because the weather is hot and the amount of rain that falls is less than the amount of water that evaporates.

However, 'desertification' is a phenomenon in which a place that was not originally a desert gradually turns into a desert due to natural or man-made factors.

In other words, the land is desolate.

Currently, about 20% of desertification in the world is caused by natural causes, but the remaining 80% is caused by humans.

Human-made causes of desertification include population growth, large-scale farming, slash-and-burn, logging, livestock, and urbanization.

If so, what effect will it have on us when land degradation or desertification occurs?

If an area becomes a desert, it is almost impossible to farm there without special skills.

Since there is no farming in these desert areas, there will be an ever-increasing shortage of food, leading to hunger and poverty.

Also, when an area begins to become a desert, animals and people will leave the area and go to other areas. This is an increase in so-called 'environmental refugees'.

In areas where people have migrated, population growth accelerates desertification, leading to a vicious cycle.

In addition to these, various factors such as water pollution, water scarcity, flooding, loss of biodiversity, increase in infectious diseases, and fine dust are linked to desertification.

There are various countries that are currently undergoing desertification, such as Africa, China, and Mongolia. It is said that Korea is also not safe from the danger of desertification.

According to the research team at Seoul National University Graduate School of Environmental Studies, when comparing Seoul and surrounding areas, the drying trend in Seoul since the 2000s was stronger than in surrounding areas.

Looking at the case of Mongolia among countries where desertification is rapidly progressing, the government encouraged goat grazing for cashmere production.

Due to excessive promotion of the cashmere industry, 'Mongolian cattle ranching' has had the greatest impact on land degradation.

In addition to this, Mongolia is the country that has suffered the biggest aftermath of 'climate change'. During the past 60 years, the average global temperature has risen by 0.7°C, while Mongolia has risen by a whopping 2.1°C.

As a result, the desert, which occupied 40% of Mongolia's total area until the 1990s, expanded to 78%.

As such, various factors such as climate change and the cashmere industry have been blamed for the desertification of Mongolia.

In Mongolia, where desertification is rapidly progressing, the increase in 'environmental refugees' is also enormous.

Since Mongolia's desertification returns to Korea as a fine dust missile, international efforts and individual practice to prevent desertification are important.

International efforts for desertification include the above-mentioned United Nations Convention against Desertification.

The United Nations Convention against Desertification is one of the United Nations' three major environmental conventions along with the Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

As desertification is not another country's business, the Convention on the Prevention of Desertification states, 'Parties from developed countries should actively support the activities of affected developing countries, provide substantial funds and aid,

Duty to encourage and promote the acquisition of technologies to prevent desertification'.

Korea, which is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Prevention of Desertification, is also carrying out various activities to prevent desertification.

We are making efforts to prevent desertification in various forms, such as afforestation projects in Mongolia or forestry education for environmental refugees.

So, what can individuals do to prevent desertification?

The first is to practice responding to climate change.

Since desertification and climate change are closely related, desertification can be prevented if we continue to respond to climate change.

Specifically, reducing food waste, becoming vegetarian, reducing plastic use, and saving energy.

Second, we support environmental groups that plant trees and grass in areas undergoing desertification, such as 'Green Asia' and 'Ecopeace Asia'.

If you donate to an organization that is actively carrying out reforestation activities in an area where desertification is taking place, it can help a lot in preventing desertification.

The third is to consume eco-friendly agricultural products grown through organic or carbon agriculture.

Today's agricultural practices are killing the soil and accelerating desertification and climate change.

Recently, organic farming and carbon farming are being talked about as an alternative to climate change and desertification for sustainable agriculture.

Eating eco-friendly produce produced in this way can be seen as a consumer vote in support of sustainable agriculture.
